Friend of The Castle

Friend of The Castle

Do you love The Castle as much as we do? Are you passionate about this wonderful community asset?

In February 2017 we launched a ‘Friend of The Castle’ scheme offering four levels of membership – individual, joint, family and lifelong – membership benefits include discounts, quarterly e-newsletters and invitations to Council organised gallery and heritage events.

The Castle, Bude is a welcoming, relaxed and friendly venue which offers plenty to see and do whatever the weather. Built as his home in 1830 by the brilliant Victorian inventor Sir Goldsworthy Gurney, the distinctive Grade II listed property is owned and operated by Bude-Stratton Town Council under whose stewardship it has blossomed.

The past four years have seen a significant period of investment by the Town Council to develop The Castle and to strengthen its appeal to a wider audience. Café Limelight and the conservatory provide an unrivalled view down the River Neet estuary across the beach towards Barrel Rock.

Weddings, Galleries and Events Coordinator Nicky van der Stelt has developed a respected and eagerly anticipated exhibition programme, showcasing the talents of local artists and craftspeople across all mediums in our art galleries.

The archives, artefacts and exhibits in the Heritage Centre have long been capably administered by the amazing volunteers who curated amongst others a hugely successful Bude Railway exhibition, presenting many fascinating newly acquired pieces of railway memorabilia.  However the arrival of Janine King, who joined The Castle team in the role of Heritage Development Officer in 2016, heralds an invigoration resulting in the swift acquisition of exciting new exhibits such as the recently arrived rare ecclesiastical pewter, the much admired Frederick Smallfield oil painting, ‘The Ringers of Launcells Tower’ and ‘Bude Haven’ by Joseph Stannard.

Bude-Stratton Town Council are currently dedicated to ensuring The Castle remains free to visit and accessible to everyone, a community asset which flourishes in the 21st Century. The Castle is unique and special. We know many of our regular visitors regard it as Bude’s jewel in the crown. We are keen to build on this passion.

All the money raised by the scheme will help to contribute to the maintenance of existing displays and securing future exhibits.  By joining, you will perpetuate our vibrant legacy and ensure we continue to thrive.
