Cal Major – Vitamin Sea

Cal Major – Founder of Paddle Against Plastic

It’s hard to know how to describe Cal Major  – Ocean advocate, waterwoman, veterinary surgeon, world-record expedition stand-up paddleboarder and keen proponent of mental health awareness are but a few titles.  Chiefly this remarkable woman’s raison d’être is to connect people back to the oceans through films, speaking and writing and in so doing protect the seas that she loves. To do this, Cal created an ocean adventures movement, Paddle Against Plastics, aimed at reconnecting people back to their environment, and exploring the issue of plastic pollution in our seas. The movement also brings positivity and community to the fore, providing solutions through collaboration and as Cal says, #oceanoptimism.

In 2019  we were honoured to host Cal’s Bude screening of her film, Vitamin Sea.  The film records her record breaking expedition, paddling the length of the UK from Lands End to John O’Groats. The film is a poignant, no-holds-barred diary of Cal’s relationship with the ocean, her mental health challenges and the shear beauty of the ocean that surrounds us.

Below you will find a lovely message from Cal sharing her thoughts about the film. These include the reasons why she made it and why now, more than ever, it is important for us all to connect with the natural world, not just for our own mental health but for the sake of the planet.

Then, if you would like uplifting, we would thoroughly recommend a viewing of Cal’s film, Vitamin Sea. Please watch the free trailer below Cal’s introduction as it’s so inspiring we’re sure you’ll then want to cosy down and watch the whole film which can be viewed on demand at vimeo for £3.99.
